This inn dates back to 1704 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The building, which was named for General "Mad" Anthony Wayne, is said to be haunted by a number of spirits. Witnesses have reported seeing spirits of a Hessian soldier, a British officer in search of a locket, and that of Edgar Allan Poe, who stayed at the inn frequently. Poltergeist activity and screams have also been reported here and the location was featured on TV's Unsolved Mysteries and Haunted History. Today, reports say the building is no longer an inn, but a synagogue and Jewish activity center.

Poltergeist

I worked at the General Wayne in, aged 18 in 1973. I didn't usually work Sunday afternoons, but one day my boss asked me to come in at 1. I had a question for the matre'd (the location of extra chairs), so I went to the front lobby (where I had never been, always entering and leaving through the employees entrance.) He was standing welcoming an elderly couple. I stood there politely waiting while they spoke. Then suddenly what seemed like it could have been a roach or a mouse ran up the man's pant leg and down the other as he frantically jerked around. It was too fast to be either one, so later i assumed it was a poltergeist. When things calmed down in 4 seconds we all stood staring bug-eyed and speechless.

Cigar smoking ghost

Was there many years ago for a bridal shower. We were in a private room away from the bar area. There were portraits on the walls of men in uniform and of George Washington etc. While I was sitting, there was a Strong smell of cigar smoke like someone was smoking it in our room but no one with a cigar was present. I went out to the bar area to see if anyone out there was smoking a cigar but also no one there. I came back to our room and sat down and asked my friend if she smelled cigar smoke and she said yes. I looked up at the portraits on wall across from the table and the man in the portrait had a cigar in his hand. Ghost of man in portrait maybe?
