Grumblethorpe

The property was built in 1744 and served as a summer residence for merchant and wine importer John Wister. During the Battle of Germantown, British General James Agnew occupied the house as his headquarters in September of 1777. General Agnew ended up wounded and died in the front parlor. Today people say his spirit haunts the place as the blood stain from his wound continues to be visible on the living room floor. There are some who also report the place being haunted by victims of yellow fever who died there. Some had been take in to live there during the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793.
