The Pen Ryn Estate has history and has been visited by historic figures like Benjamin Franklin, Francis Hopkinson (signer of the Declaration of Independence), and Benjamin West (famous colonial portrait painter). It was a place for people to find tranquility away from the hustle of the city. Many believe the property remains haunted by the ghost of Robert Bickley and a female spirit who is supposedly his girlfriend. Some have said each Dec. 24th the woman ghost would appear on a black horse and use the whip she holds to hit anyone who comes near. Mr. Bickley is also said to appear.

Today the property serves as a riverfront estate for weddings, banquets, corporate meetings and group tours.

The place really is haunted

I went to school there in the early 80s. My mom forgot to pick me up from a soccer game. Had to go back in to call home, realized I forgot my homework so went back upstairs to the second floor room. While walking back down the hallway, suddenly loud footsteps came running towards me. I took off like a shot. I know I was the only person in the building. Ran down the steps, never touched one except for the landings.
