Crier in the Country Restaurant

My husband & I had our first ’official’ date there in Nov. of ‘84 and he also proposed there in Sept. of ‘86. We have special memories of a lovely place. It makes me sad to see it abandoned & run down.

This was a very nice restaurant and a great place to hold a family party.

My sister in law loved this restaurant. Back in the mid 90s, her daughter and I went to the restaurant to get her a gift certificate as a Christmas present. After waiting a few minutes for a hostess , we rang the service bell. We thought she was busy because we could clearly hear a party going on which we assumed was why it was taking so long and we didn’t want to be rude. When the hostess came to the front we asked for the gift certificate. I commented to her that we were sorry we rang the bell because she was probably busy with the party that was going on but we couldn’t wait any longer. Her response totally freaked us out … she said there is no party going on, I’m the only one here right now. We told her we could hear music playing and people laughing … she laughed and said…I hear that from a lot of people. This was not a faint sound from down a long hallway… this was loud and clear music and laughing.

I have had friends who say that they met a guy there because while waiting for a drink at that the bar bar someone tapped them on the shoulder and they thought it was the guy standing next to them playing a joke but the guys always swore it wasn’t them.

I also had a friend go to dinner with her husband and she ordered a drink and when it got to the table she left to go to the restroom and when she came back the drink was empty. She immediately blamed her husband. He swore he didn’t drink her wine because he had his own yet hers was gone. He never noticed a thing.

So yes I believe this place is haunted but not scary haunting… more like Casper the friendly ghosts!

I would love to see someone come along and purchase this property for a wedding venue or bring it back to an everyday restaurant. It was a beautiful place.

I always loved going there for Dinner at least every couple of months. I really miss it what a shame it closed.

I lived on the third floor of this once lovely old house for the entire time my husband, Jim Devereaux, and I owned the property. My teenage daughter also lived there and attended Garnet Valley High School. Oh, yes, we also had a dog who once jumped off the second floor porch into a tree.
I can tell you, for sure, it was not haunted!! the picture you show does not do it justice. The inside was lovely also. The photo does not show the oldest part of the structure in back of the main building.
The handicap add on and the car port, really spoils the beauty of this lovely old house.

The only reason it looks so bad today is because it has been neglected!! Lorraine Devereaux, Jensen Beach Florida

Worked there in the 70s when it was Devereaux's Fox Crest Inn. Spent many a night there past closing into the early hours of the morning, and even stayed overnight once on the third floor. Never saw nor heard any ghosts, nor did anyone else working there during those years. Cool looking place for ghost stories though.
