Established in 1773, the property was a popular meeting place for the founding fathers of our country, but it faced a fire in 1834 and was eventually tore down in 1854.

The tavern was rebuilt for the 1976 bicentennial celebration and it was done so true to its original design that many say even the spirits that were formerly there continue to thrive there today. Spirits known to exist here include a bride who was killed when a fire in her room was ignited by the curtains and the spirit of a waiter who was killed there in a duel. Some say the sighting of the bride spirit can be seen in the City Tavern's window, while the spirit of the waiter is said to move tableware around and rattle silverware.
